Taylor Sheridan on the red carpetIPA/INSTARimages.com
For a while, Taylor Sheridan’s TV empire felt pretty much untouchable. Whether it was Yellowstone itself or one of its many offshoots, his shows had a way of swallowing up the conversation and making every new launch feel like an event. That kind of dominance is hard to maintain forever, especially once a franchise gets big enough that even a solid debut can start to look a little modest by comparison.
That is what makes Paramount+’s current U.S. chart a little eyebrow-raising. As of March 6, Marshals sits at No. 5 among TV shows on Paramount+ in the United States, while Landman is further down at No. 9. Those are perfectly respectable placements, but they are not exactly the kind of overwhelming chart takeover that Sheridan’s brand has often inspired. Part of the intrigue here is that Marshals has a premise that should feel tailor-made for Sheridan fans. The series brings Luke Grimes back as Kayce Dutton, now operating outside the Yellowstone Ranch as part of an elite U.S. Marshals unit.
The cast is led by Grimes as Kayce Dutton, with Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner, Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz, and Tatanka Means as Miles Kittle. Brecken Merrill also returns as Tate Dutton, while Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty bring that gravitas we all loved. Critically, though, Marshals is not arriving as a slam dunk. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the series at 47% from 15 critic reviews, with a 41% audience score from 100-plus ratings. That is a much shakier launch than the early “wait and see” vibe suggested when only a handful of reviews had been posted, and it helps explain why the show is mid-table rather than "oh lordy, we've got to watch this right now."

Collider’s review stated that Marshals made the smart move of not trying to be a straight-up Yellowstone sequel, pivoting instead into a CBS-friendly procedural series that gives Kayce Dutton a new beginning — even if the transition comes with some growing pains. Michael John Petty acknowledged the limitations of network television — less grit, occasional repetitive dialogue, and tighter 42-minute pacing — but suggested that the format ultimately suits Kayce’s story better than the sprawling soap-operatic tone of Yellowstone.
"Marshals is a neo-Western that is chock-full of potential. It's action-packed, thrilling, and full of everything you could ask for in a Kayce Dutton-led series that fights hard to divorce itself from the "Y" that still lingers in the background. It's not perfect, nor does it claim to be, but once it gets through the initial growing pains, it will be able to stand firmly on its own. The chemistry between Grimes and Marshall-Green is exactly what the bond between two ex-SEALs should be, and it's not hard to like the rest of the Marshals cast as well, especially as we begin to learn more about them."
Marshals airs at 8PM on CBS every Sunday, and streams on Paramount+.
