Whenever Marvel announces one of these gigantic crossover movies, the same worry always creeps in: with that many characters, how many of them are actually going to matter? It is a fair question, especially for a film like Avengers: Doomsday, which is already shaping up to be one of the most crowded events the MCU has ever attempted. According to Thunderbolts* star Lewis Pullman, though, fans do not need to panic about the movie turning into a glorified parade of entrances and exits.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Pullman pushed back on the idea that Doomsday will be some kind of empty “cameo fest.” “Every character has their moment that builds the dimensions of them,” he said. He then praised Joe and Anthony Russo, adding, “They do not want anyone just sitting in the background.” Pullman also said the directors took seriously “the responsibility of having some of the best actors in the world all together,” while teasing that there are “a lot of really exciting pair-ups” that fans will be thrilled to see.
That is a pretty reassuring message coming from someone who is right in the middle of the MCU’s newest power shift. Pullman made his Marvel debut as Bob Reynolds/Sentry in Thunderbolts* and is already confirmed to return in Avengers: Doomsday, where he will be stepping into a much bigger ensemble field. He was also careful not to say too much, which, honestly, is extremely on brand for Marvel secrecy. In the same interview, Pullman joked that talking about Marvel is “always such a funny dance of saying nothing while still words are coming out of your mouth.” Even so, what he did say is probably enough to calm at least one major anxiety about the film.
