Starring Jordan as Adonis Creed, the illegitimate son of former heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed, the sports drama follows the young boxer as he travels to Philadelphia to train under his father’s old rival-turned-friend, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Tony Bellew, Graham McTavish, and more star in supporting roles.
A critical and commercial success, Creed was widely hailed as one of the best films of 2015 and kicked off a new franchise. It’s a masterfully crafted boxing drama with impeccable direction, writing, and performances. For any other duo, this would be a career-defining film, but despite its massive fan base, it’s not as talked-about these days as some of Coogler and Jordan’s later collaborations, including Sinners. 2 ‘Black Panther’ (2018)

Coogler and Jordan’s biggest hit to date, Black Panther is an MCU superhero film based on Marvel Comics characters that stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the titular hero and king of the hidden nation of Wakanda. When the violent revolutionary Killmonger (Jordan) springs an unexpected challenge to his rule, T’Challa comes to question his country’s past, traditions, and isolationist policies. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.
A universally acclaimed crowd-pleaser with an intelligent, politically-charged narrative and superb characters, Black Panther was a massive hit when it arrived in theaters in 2018, breaking several box office records and becoming the first superhero movie to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Sure, it’s a very different kind of movie, but as we celebrate Sinners’ historic successes, it’s impossible not to bring up Coogler’s landmark film. Jordan’s performance as the charismatic Killmonger, which stands alongside his dual role in Sinners as one of the actor’s greatest performances.
3 ‘Us’ (2019)

Jordan Peele’s second directorial after the celebrated Get Out, Us is a psychological horror movie starring Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Thomas, a woman who suffered an inexplicable and ill-remembered incident as a child. Written and directed by Peele, the movie follows Adelaide and her family on a vacation that’s interrupted in the middle of the night by a group of terrifying doppelgängers, leading her to uncover a sinister secret. Besides Nyong’o, the movie also features Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker in lead roles.
Like Sinners, Us is a powerfully dramatic film that uses dual performances, and its story is arguably an even better exploration of duality as a concept. The film’s gripping plot and stellar performances earned it critical acclaim after its world premiere at the 2019 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival. The movie earned several accolades, including a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Screenplay, and was a box office hit, thrilling audiences with its eerie, unsettling story.
4 ‘30 Days of Night’ (2007)

Directed by David Slade, 30 Days of Night is a film adaptation of Steve Niles’s horror comic book miniseries, with Niles co-writing the screenplay. Josh Hartnett stars as Eben Oleson, the sheriff of a small Alaskan town called Barrow that’s preparing for the annual month-long polar night. When vampires attack the town, Oleson and his estranged wife Stella (Melissa George) lead a group of survivors, hiding from the monsters in a deadly wait for the sun. Danny Huston, Ben Foster, Mark Boone Junior, Mark Rendall, Elizabeth McRae, Amber Sainsbury, Manu Bennett, and more star in supporting roles.
Though it had a decidedly mixed critical reception, 30 Days of Night was a popular movie when it came out in 2007, spawning a franchise that includes a sequel and two TV miniseries. While the film has several inconsistencies and a very pulpy story, it is an undeniably entertaining horror movie, with great performances by Hartnett, George, and especially Danny Huston. It’s a genuinely scary movie about ordinary people besieged by vampires, making it a great thematic double feature with Sinners.

Nia DaCosta’s 2021 legacy sequel to the 1992 horror classic, Candyman was directed and co-written by the filmmaker and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the lead role. The movie follows Anthony McCoy, a young visual artist who has a long-forgotten connection to the events of the first movie, as he finds himself drawn to the urban legend of the Candyman, with disastrous consequences. Teyonah Parris co-stars as Anthony’s girlfriend and art gallery director Brianna “Bri” Cartwright, with Colman Domingo, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Vanessa Williams, Tony Todd, and more in supporting roles.
With Candyman, Nia DaCosta delivers a legacy sequel that transcends the trend by positioning itself as part of a greater and darker multi-generational story, rooted in the violent history of American racial conflict. The film expands on the original mythology and transforms it into a new urban legend, and its compelling performances, inventive design, and artful direction bring the whole thing to life as an enthralling cinematic journey. Critically and commercially successful, Candyman is simultaneously horror at its most elevated and grounded, a trait it certainly shares with Sinners.
6 ‘Near Dark’ (1987)

Co-written and directed by Kathryn Bigelow in her solo directorial debut, Near Dark is one of the most innovative horror films of the 1980s. Set in a small Oklahoma town, the movie follows Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar), a young man who is turned into a vampire by an attractive drifter, joining her family of nomadic vampires. Jenny Wright, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, and Jenette Goldstein star in key supporting roles.
Though vampire movies were in trend in the '80s, Near Dark was not a box office hit in its day, having arrived in theaters rather too soon after the vampire comedy The Lost Boys, but the film was well-received by critics and has since developed a reputation as a cult classic. Bringing neo-Western sensibilities to the vampire movie genre, the film is now considered a landmark of '80s horror, with an engaging story, great performances, and stunning visuals that still hold up decades later. 7 ‘The Wailing’ (2016)

If you enjoyed the folk horror elements of Sinners, you definitely need to check out Na Hong-jin’s South Korean horror film The Wailing. Set in a small mountain village, the movie explores a series of strange killings that begin with the arrival of a Japanese stranger and the outbreak of a mysterious illness. Officer Jong-goo (Kwak Do-won) attempts to find the cause of these strange phenomena, but his search grows desperate when his own daughter becomes one of the victims. Set in a prosperous Creole-American community in 1960s Louisiana, the film stars Jurnee Smollett as Eve Batiste, the 10-year-old daughter of a respected doctor, Louis (Samuel L. Jackson), who discovers her father having an affair. With her faith in her family crumbling, Eve turns to a witch for help. Directed by Walter Hill, Crossroads is a musical drama that started life as an award-winning student screenplay written by John Fusco. Inspired by the story of legendary blues musician Robert Johnson, the film stars Ralph Macchio as a classical guitar student at Juilliard who grows obsessed with a missing song by Johnson and tracks down his longtime friend Willie Brown (Joe Seneca) to find it. The movie also features Jami Gertz, Robert Judd, and guitarist Steve Vai in notable roles, with music by Ry Cooder.
One of the most celebrated aspects of Sinners is its powerful blues soundtrack, and that’s exactly what makes this cult classic film such a great companion piece. Despite positive reviews, Crossroads was not a big hit in its day, but it has evolved into a niche classic, specifically among blues fans and musicians. It’s Ry Cooder’s movie just as much as it is Ralph Macchio’s or John Fusco’s, and its combination of myth and music is a rare find.
10 ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ (1996)

The movie that’s most widely compared to Sinners, From Dusk Till Dawn is also a film about criminal brothers who find themselves facing off against vampires in a bar. However, that’s where the similarities end. This 1996 action horror movie was directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino, who co-stars in the film alongside George Clooney, Salma Hayek, Harvey Keitel, and Juliette Lewis. Clooney and Tarantino play the brothers, who take a family hostage while crossing into Mexico, then end up walking into a strip club that’s far more sinister than they could have imagined.
A campy and violent dark comedy movie, From Dusk Till Dawn was not a critical favorite in its day, but it did achieve significant success at the box office and developed a cult following. In the years since, it’s spawned two direct-to-video sequels, a TV show, and a video game, and the movie is still quite popular around the world.
