Guy Ritchie is preparing a new Sherlock Holmes story, but with a twist, and it’s already better than the BBC’s Sherlock in one important way. Sherlock Holmes is one of the most popular literary characters, and as such, and thanks to the status of the rights to the character, he and his stories have been adapted to all types of media for decades.
On the big screen, one of the best adaptations of Sherlock Holmes was Guy Ritchie’s movies, starring Robert Downey Jr., and on TV, it was the BBC’s Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The latter brought the Great Detective to the modern world, while Ritchie’s movies kept the Victorian setting of the source material.
More Sherlock Holmes adaptations are in development, and one of the most exciting ones is Prime Video’s Young Sherlock, executive-produced by Guy Ritchie, which is already better than Sherlock in one big way.
Prime Video's Young Sherlock Features The Detective's Parents

Based on Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes book series, Young Sherlock, as the title says, follows a young version of the famous detective. This Sherlock Holmes (played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin), is a 19-year-old student at Oxford University and not yet the accomplished detective we all know – in fact, he lacks discipline.
Because of this, Young Sherlock doesn’t feature John Watson as Holmes’ friend and companion, but he will meet other interesting new characters. Young Sherlock will see the detective solving his first murder mystery after a murder at Oxford puts his freedom at risk. What he’s not expecting is that this will lead him to a global-level conspiracy.
Among the characters of Young Sherlock are Holmes’ parents, Silas (Joseph Fiennes) and Cordelia (Natascha McElhone), and, of course, his brother Mycroft (Max Irons). Holmes’ parents are a huge addition, and it allows Young Sherlock to do what Sherlock never did: explore the dynamic between Holmes and his parents.
Sherlock briefly featured Holmes’ parents in seasons 3 and 4, but their role was forgettable and didn’t show much of the dynamic in the Holmes family. Young Sherlock is expected to give them a bigger role, though not a lead one, in the story, filling that gap in the Great Detective’s story.
Young Sherlock Can Explore Another Key Backstory The BBC Show Forgot
Moriarty distracted in BBC Sherlock
Thanks to it being set during the younger years of the character, Young Sherlock can explore a key part of Holmes’ backstory that Sherlock (and many other adaptations) have ignored: how Holmes and his archenemy, Moriarty, met.
Moriarty was one of the best characters in Sherlock, and his death actually marked the beginning of the show’s decline. Now, Young Sherlock is confirmed to feature a young Moriarty, played by Dónal Finn, and it’s highly likely that the show will go into how they met and how their legendary rivalry started.
Young Sherlock can do these two things a lot better than Sherlock, as well as many others, if it has consistent good quality, solid writing, and character development, which are some of the flaws of Sherlock’s final seasons.
