Tom Hardy didn’t become one of the biggest action stars in the world overnight, and the role that many would say put him straight on the path to stardom has become a massive streaming sensation. 13 years ago (we don’t know how it’s been that long either), Hardy starred opposite Christian Bale and Gary Oldman in The Dark Knight Rises, the trilogy-concluding Batman movie from director Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight Rises is streaming on both HBO Max and Tubi in the U.S., and globally, the film has returned to the VOD top 10 in several countries, including Panama and Yemen.

It’s rare that a movie as acclaimed as The Dark Knight Rises, which earned scores of 87% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, exists within a trilogy yet is still not viewed as the strongest entry. On most lists, it falls just behind its predecessor, The Dark Knight, though Hardy’s performance as Bane is beloved, even to this day. Warner Bros. reportedly spent around $250 million producing The Dark Knight Rises, but it proved to be a worthwhile investment when the film grossed $1 billion worldwide. It’s the highest-grossing film of Hardy’s career.

The Dark Knight Rises was the final Batman movie in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne. Two years after Nolan hung up his metaphorical bat cape, he directed one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time in Interstellar. He then turned back the clock to the WWII genre for his next movie, Dunkirk, which Quentin Tarantino recently hailed as one of his favorite movies. He most recently directed Tenet and Oppenheimer in 2020 and 2023.

When Does Christopher Nolan’s Next Movie Come Out?

Christopher Nolan’s next movie, The Odyssey, will be released exclusively in theaters on July 17, 2026. Featuring a star-studded ensemble led by Matt Damon and Tom Holland, the film will be a live-action adaptation of Homer’s famous story. The first trailer for The Odyssey was released earlier this year, and a preview of the film will begin playing in theaters ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash this weekend. The Odyssey is expected to be one of the biggest movies of 2026, and after Nolan’s Oppenheimer won seven Oscars, expectations are high for his next epic.

Check out The Dark Knight Rises on HBO Max or Tubi in America and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
