The two movies have now grossed a combined total of over $1 billion worldwide, with the majority of their revenue coming from U.S. theaters. Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: For Good hasn't yet passed the $500 million mark worldwide, but it has made more than $300 million at the domestic box office. In doing so, the fantasy musical has overtaken Johnny Depp's biggest-ever blockbuster in a leading role. Depp also starred in the slightly more successful Alice in Wonderland, but he played more of a supporting role.
The film's $312 million domestic box office haul puts it ahead of the $305 million that Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl grossed back in 2003. Memorably, the swashbuckler film based on a Disney theme park ride earned Depp an Academy Award nomination in the Best Actor category for his performance as Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp would return to play the fan-favorite character in four more movies, with the last being Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The franchise has been dormant for years, with planned reboots never materializing. Depp is now reportedly circling a return, after it was made clear that he would be replaced as the franchise's lead star following his personal troubles. The Curse of the Black Pearl was directed by Gore Verbinski, and is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 79% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "May leave you exhausted like the theme park ride that inspired it; however, you'll have a good time when it's over."
'Wicked: For Good' Is Having a Tougher Time With Critics than Its Predecessor Did
The film's audience score is sitting at an even higher 86%. Similarly, Wicked: For Good seems to have resonated more with fans of the first film and the source Broadway musical than with critics. The movie has a 68% critics' score on the aggregator, while the audience score is a "verified hot" 93%. The first Wicked was an awards-season juggernaut, earning 10 Academy Award nominations. The sequel seems to be having a more difficult time, although appreciation for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's performances remains as high as ever. Wicked: For Good should be able to pass Alice in Wonderland's $334 million haul in the next few days as well. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
