As buzz swirls around the release of the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer — the upcoming movie will reportedly reunite stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans — one of the best Marvel movies ever made has been overtaken at the global box office by fellow Disney release Zootopia 2. The animated sequel is on a record-breaking spree at the box office, having passed the coveted $1 billion milestone in just 17 days. It's now chasing the $1.7 billion record of Inside Out 2, which remains the top-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time. On its way to breaking Inside Out 2's record, Zootopia 2 will pass hits such as Frozen 2 and Incredibles 2. But before it did so, it overtook every film directed by Christopher Nolan, as well as Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.

Released in 2016, Civil War served as the grand MCU introduction of Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther and Tom Holland's Spider-Man before superhero soft-launches and future world-building became tiresome tropes in franchise filmmaking. The movie was directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, who made their Marvel debut with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and would later go on to direct Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. They have been brought back into the Marvel fold to direct Doomsday, at a time when the audience seems to be growing tired of the MCU. Civil War was released in an altogether different era for superhero cinema. Produced on a reported budget of $250 million, the movie grossed $1.15 billion globally and earned excellent reviews. It's now sitting at a "certified fresh" 90% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Captain America: Civil War begins the next wave of Marvel movies with an action-packed superhero blockbuster boasting a decidedly non-cartoonish plot and the courage to explore thought-provoking themes."

'Zootopia 2' Has Grossed Over $500 Million in China Alone

Zootopia 2 has received similarly positive reviews. It's currently sitting at a "certified fresh" 91% score on RT, where the consensus reads, "Cleverly layering a thoughtful message onto another crackerjack caper while solidifying Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as one of the most endearing buddy pairings in ages, Zootopia 2 more than justifies a return trip to the big city." Bringing back stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, the movie has done phenomenally well in China, where it trails only Endgame as the highest-grossing Hollywood release ever.
