Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the IT: Welcome to Derry season 1 finale. After the IT: Welcome to Derry season 1 finale, star Chris Chalk addresses the possibility of a Dick Hallorann spinoff. Chalk plays a younger version of the character, best known for his role in The Shining, in the HBO prequel series.
Welcome to Derry sets up The Shining in the finale with Dick sharing that he is leaving the town and going to work as a cook at a hotel in London. This is an important step toward eventually working at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado and crossing paths with the Torrance family. Between this setup and an overwhelmingly positive response to Chalk's performance, many fans on social media have expressed hope for a spinoff set in the years before The Shining.
In a conversation with TV Insider, Chalk reveals that he is fully open to the possibility of a spinoff focused on Dick and has even pitched the idea himself. Check out his comments below:
I’ve pitched it! I have also said, "Hey, Dick can kind of do anything. Now that he’s connected to the universe, there’s no need to disconnect him."
Chalk spoke further about how Welcome to Derry's ending pays homage to The Shining and how Dick still has a long way to go before becoming the older version of the character that audiences know well. He also believes that Dick is not as healed as he seems to be, which would tie into his ongoing journey in the spinoff.
You never want to wink at an audience, but the drama’s over. Let’s just have a little fun. And also, it’s like Chris Chalk’s own desire to see Dick manifest in his own show or something. So for me, it felt as aspirational as it did for Dick to go off into this unknown. But I’m lucky because I know in 20 or 30 years where he’s going to be, and I’m like, "Oh boy. What did he do to get there? What was the process to become this kind of more docile master of the Shine versus Dick now?" Because even once the show’s over, he’s by no means fixed. He’s just broke. He just broke five minutes ago, so I predict that Dick is not well at all still.
Chalk being fully on board for a spinoff bodes well, as do the specific storylines that he would like to explore. Along with being the star of the series, Chalk could potentially be an executive producer and have creative input on the direction that Dick's story takes.
Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan previously had plans for a Dick Hallorann spinoff series, but the project was ultimately scrapped.
Dick grows a great deal in Welcome to Derry season 1, and his decision to save the younger characters sets up his commitment to helping Danny Torrance years later. There are many aspects of his identity, emotions, and his unique abilities that he still needs to figure out, though, which is fertile ground for a spinoff.
Whether he is really healed after consuming the Maturin root is one major storyline that the spinoff can tackle. While the finale arguably indicates that he is in a better place, Chalk believes otherwise, meaning Dick still needs to learn how to master his abilities and find inner peace.
IT: Welcome to Derry season 2, which has not been officially renewed yet, is unlikely to feature Chalk since it will go back 27 years in the timeline to 1935. This means that a spinoff set between the season 1 finale and The Shining is the best way to continue Dick's story with Chalk continuing to play the role.
