Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Jedi Knights #10
After 26 years, Star Wars has officially crowned one of its all-time greatest Jedi Knights. Thanks to a single line of dialogue from Obi-Wan Kenobi, it's pretty easy to see who the GOAT of the Jedi Order truly is.
In the final issue of Marvel’s canonical Jedi Knights by Marc Guggenheim and Madibek Musabekov, Star Wars delivers a pretty awesome verdict on the Jedi Master who's clearly a cut above all the rest: Qui-Gon Jinn.
It's Official: Qui-Gon Jinn Is Star Wars' Greatest Jedi Knight
In the final issue of Marvel’s Jedi Knights series set before The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Qui-Gon Jinn that he's “an inspiration for the entire Jedi Order.” It’s a quiet line between the master and apprentice at the very end of this series, but its impact is quite large.
As we see throughout the issue, Qui-Gon Jinn is shown confronting a past failure and a vengeful foe named Corlis Rath from when he was still a Padawan. Having received flawed wisdom from his own master, the result was a bitter rivalry with Rath and uncharacteristic aggression from Jinn himself.
In the present, Jinn chooses to make things right, and all without igniting his lightsaber (even though that would have been the easiest option). He resolves the conflict through empathy, patience, and trust in The Living Force, embodying Jedi principles at their purest level.
Despite Dooku’s disillusionment and struggle with the dark side, Qui-Gon ultimately chose humility and restraint years later, proving he learned the right lessons from his flawed master. As such, Qui-Gon's better choices inspire his own Padawan, hence the well-deserved high praise from Obi-Wan by the issue's end.
We've Known For A While: Qui-Gon Jinn Is The GOAT
All things considered, this new Star Wars issue is simply the latest in a long list of moments where Qui-Gon proved himself to be the Jedi's Jedi. Qui-Gon has always stood apart because of his strong devotion to the Living Force, trusting his own counsel and instincts in alignment with the Will of the Force over the will of the Jedi Council.
While this ironically identified Qui-Gon as a "maverick" in the eyes of other Jedi Knights, it's actually proof that Qui-Gon's Jedi path was one of the purest we've ever seen, one of the most compassionate and present-minded Jedi in the entire Star Wars canon.
Qui-Gon's teachings helped shape Obi-Wan into a remarkable Jedi Master in his own right. Likewise, it's almost a certainty that Qui-Gon would have saved Anakin Skywalker from the dark side had he lived to train The Chosen One as intended.
While many Star Wars fans already considered Qui-Gon Jinn to be the GOAT of the Jedi Order before this new issue, it's pretty nice to see an in-universe confirmation all the same.
