Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 introduces a character created for the show, and she is officially pointless. The second season of Percy Jackson has debuted on Disney+, with three episodes available. So far, it has been pretty fantastic, and I say that as a fan of the books. However, I do have one big gripe with this season so far.

Leading up to the release of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, word broke that they would introduce an entirely new character who was created specifically for the TV show. Many fans of the book balked at the idea of this new Percy Jackson character. I remained hesitantly optimistic.

I was open to the idea that maybe she could be a positive addition. There have been some positive changes from the Percy Jackson book that heightened the themes and expanded the characters in interesting ways. Unfortunately, this change isn’t one of the positive ones. I’ll say it, Percy Jackson’s new character, Alison Simms, is officially pointless.

Alison Simms Was Created For Percy Jackson Season 2

Alison Simms, the daughter of Apollo, is a former camper at Camp Half-Blood who aged out of the program. Now, she lives among humans. She is a true believer in Kronos’ cause, so she joins Luke’s team. As shown in her two scenes, she’s particularly aggressive and handy with a bow and arrow.

Alison was, theoretically, added to Disney+'s fantasy show to prove that Luke isn’t the only half-blood who is disillusioned by the gods. Kronos’ movement is growing and stretching wider than it seems.

Luke does have a growing army of monsters and half-bloods, so it’s not completely out of the question for her to exist. However, the problem comes when she is given dialogue and time that could have been better spent on the existing storyline from the book.

Alison Simms Has Done Absolutely Nothing To Help The Story

Alison Simms’ big scenes so far have been confronting Grover on his quest for Pan and fighting Percy on the Princess Andromeda. Neither exists in any form in the book. Frankly, neither has been particularly beneficial to the story, either.

The first scene was pointless because we would have learned within 2 episodes that Luke was working with other half-bloods. It’s in the book. They directly state that six more half-bloods joined the cause, and we even see half-blood Chris Rodriguez on the Princess Andromeda in the book. We didn't need a new character with a backstory to prove this.

The second scene was pointless because she basically just gets pushed off the boat and saved by the giants. Percy Jackson & The Olympians is packed with fight scenes and action sequences, so it’s not like we really needed an extra fight scene. What’s more, it wasn’t even well-choreographed compared to other fights in the TV show.

Unfortunately, Luke isn’t around for most of The Sea of Monsters, so it’s not likely Alison Simms will get a remarkable scene to justify her existence in the story. It really just feels unnecessary. If they really wanted to show that there are more demigods on Luke’s side in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, they could have just included them as extras in scenes that already exist in the book.
