If Mare of Easttown were set in small-town Santa Cruz, Mexico, you'd get something very close to The Accident. Premiering on Netflix in 2024, the series follows a tight-knit group of wealthy families, centered on (Sebastián Martínez) and his police officer wife Daniela (Ana Claudia Talancón). They throw a party for their youngest son's birthday, but out of nowhere, there is a tragic accident. In the aftermath, the town's elite turn on one another, secrets are buried, and the angel of death looms over them, setting off a chain of irreversible consequences.
What Is Netflix's 'The Accident' About?
Season 1 of The Accident begins with the events leading up to a birthday party. The show centers on Emiliano and Daniela Lobo, a wealthy couple hosting a backyard celebration for their young son, Rodrigo (Yago Andreu Sandoval). Among the guests are family friends, business associates, and their children, including Moncho (Silverio Palacios), the family's groundskeeper, who helps set up a bouncy house for the kids. As the party takes place, distractions lead to the bouncy house being left unsecured.
When the children climb inside, a sudden gust of wind lifts the bouncy house into the air and carries it away. The accident resulted in the deaths of three children — including Rodrigo — several serious injuries, and one child, Paula, going missing. The devastated families search for answers and justice. Moncho is quickly blamed for negligence and arrested after being attacked by a grieving father. The episode ends with a shocking revelation: Emiliano admits in private that he was actually responsible for failing to secure the bouncy house.
Over its 10 episodes in Season 1, The Accident revolves around Emiliano's moral dilemma. On one hand, he wants to confess the truth to the authorities. On the other hand, he knows that doing so would destroy his business, shatter his family, and possibly get him killed. Trapped between guilt and self-preservation, Emiliano chooses what feels like his only option: keeping the truth about the accident hidden and ensuring that Moncho — the innocent man now under suspicion — stays silent. However, money and influence can only do so much. As grief turns into rage, some parents refuse to trust the law and instead seek revenge on their own terms.
Like 'Mare of Easttown,' 'The Accident' Shows How Grief Changes People for Better and for Worse
Grief is portrayed differently in Mare of Easttown and The Accident, both emotionally and narratively. In Mare of Easttown, the story centers on Detective Sergeant Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet), once celebrated as Easttown's "Lady Hawk" after a championship-winning basketball shot in high school. Years later, that sense of optimism collapses after the suicide of her eldest son, Kevin (Cody Kostro), who died in their attic. Since then, Mare refuses to speak about him, rejects professional help, and lives in a state of emotional paralysis. Though she remains outwardly functional with her daughter Siobhan (Angourie Rice), her mother Helen (Jean Smart), and her ex-husband, Frank (David Denman), Mare is stuck between unresolved grief and growing cynicism.

Posts By Brad LaCourWhat's unique about The Accident is that Emiliano not only has to keep his negligence hidden — he has to do so while grieving the loss of his own son. It is bad enough that his child was killed, but for his son to die because of him being distracted by an important call from an American investor is an even heavier blow. Unlike Mare, whose grief is met with understanding from those around her, Emiliano's situation is complicated. Instead of receiving the consolation he needs, he is often blackmailed by others into doing their bidding so they will not report him to the police. While Mare's interactions are rooted in care, Emiliano's are largely transactional, turning him into a pawn.
However, Emiliano is not the only parent to lose a child. On the other end of the moral spectrum are the notorious construction company owners Agustín "El Charro" Mejía (Alberto Guerra) and his wife Lupita (Eréndira Ibarra). With connections to both the police and gangsters, Charro has no qualms about killing whoever he believes is responsible for his son Gabo's (Dhaniel Cardoza) death. He and Lupita channel their grief into vengeance, first targeting Moncho. Charro remains convinced that Moncho caused the bouncy castle tragedy, unaware that Emiliano is actually responsible. As his rage escalates, Charro's recklessness snowballs, impacting his marriage in the process.
Season 2 of 'The Accident' Expands a Small-Town Tragedy into a State-Wide Criminal Manhunt

Crime serves as the biggest plot driver in both Mare of Easttown and The Accident. In the former, Mare is under fire for failing to search for missing girl Katie Bailey (Caitilin Houlahan), who has been gone for a year. She instead brushes off the cold case as closed, arguing that a troubled teen like Katie must have gotten herself involved with drugs and the wrong people. However, when Mare is pulled into another case, the murder of 16-year-old teen mother Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny), she realizes this one is far more personal. The deeper she digs, the more unsavory secrets are revealed, involving her ex-husband's engagement party and possibly her best friend, Lori Ross (Julianna Nicholson).
In The Accident, the other parents desperately need someone to place the blame on. There is a clear juxtaposition between Episode 1 and the episodes that follow. At the beginning of Episode 1, the adults all seem to get along, smiling, joking, and drinking champagne together at the party. After the tragedy, that collective sense of community is gone. Everyone begins pinning the blame on one another, and everyone becomes a villain in some form, lawfully or not. Meanwhile, Carla Robles (Regina Blandón), a rising journalist and Emiliano's sister-in-law, exploits the family tragedy, twisting it into a major exposé to secure a promotion.
While much of Season 1 follows Emiliano trying to keep his crime as low-key as possible, all bets are off in Season 2 of The Accident. The second season sees both Emiliano and Charro finally imprisoned, but, refusing to be unjustly jailed, Charro uses his resources to orchestrate a full-blown prison break and sparks a manhunt. The knives are out, the guns are shot in broad daylight, and people openly kill anyone who stands in their way. Even though Emiliano has attempted to right his wrongs, Charro has no intention of stopping. If he cannot reach Emiliano himself, he is willing to target those closest to him — his wife and daughter. If you thought Season 1 of The Accident was an emotional rollercoaster, Season 2 is even more brutal and unpredictable.
