Fans of the war genre can't get enough of this addictive World War II masterpiece, almost two decades after its release, but who can blame them? In 2009, Universal Pictures and the since-defunct Weinstein Company released the acclaimed Inglourious Basterds, directed by Quentin Tarantino and featuring a star-studded ensemble cast. The film was both a critical and commercial success while also amassing numerous accolades in the U.S. and internationally. That winning streak has now extended to streaming, as Inglourious Basterds surges on global charts, thereby proving its enduring legacy.

Inglourious Basterds is experiencing a resurgence on Chili, the European subscription-free streaming service, where it has been among the top 5 most popular movie titles but now ranks among the top 10. Starring in the war comedy are Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger, Daniel Brühl, Til Schweiger, and Mélanie Laurent. Tarantino wrote the screenplay (beginning in 1998, but struggled with the ending, though he returned to it after directing Death Proof in 2007), while Lawrence Bender served as producer.

If you've yet to check out the war gem, Inglourious Basterds' official synopsis teases it as such:

“It is the first year of Germany's occupation of France. Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of Jewish soldiers to commit violent acts of retribution against the Nazis, including the taking of their scalps. He and his men join forces with Bridget von Hammersmark, a German actress and undercover agent, to bring down the leaders of the Third Reich. Their fates converge with theater owner Shosanna Dreyfus, who seeks to avenge the Nazis' execution of her family.”

Created with a $70 million budget, Inglourious Basterds was a financial hit, grossing $120.5 million in North America and $200.9 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of over $321 million. This made it Tarantino's highest-grossing film to that point, until Django Unchained, a 2012 Western, surpassed it. As a critical success, the dark WWII comedy boasts a Certified Fresh 89% on Rotten Tomatoes with the critics' consensus describing it as "violent, unrestrained, and thoroughly entertaining." Additionally, among its accolades are eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
