An excellent JRPG is available to play for free right now, and Final Fantasy fans may be pleased by the quality this title delivers. The classic Square Enix franchise has established a standard for games in the genre, and there are plenty of games that were inspired by it over the years. Even the 2025 GOTY Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was inspired by Final Fantasy games, both old and new.
There is, however, another smaller JRPG that is clearly inspired by the franchise and that may be well worth your time. Sword of Convallaria is a fantasy-based tactical RPG that mixes turn-based combat with pixel art. The game can be claimed for free on Steam, and once it is added to your library, it will be permanently available for download via your account.
Sword Of Convallaria Is A Great Free Game
The Turn-Based RPG Has Gacha Mechanics
Gloria gets ready for battle with soldiers in Sword of Convallaria.
Sword of Convallaria is a completely free-to-play (F2P) game, though it does feature gacha mechanics used to obtain new characters and weapons, unlike Duet Night Abyss on Steam. Even so, you can enjoy it perfectly without ever having to spend real-life money on it. Because new characters are constantly released, you may feel a bit left out due to how gacha mechanics work, but you can absolutely play it with what comes for free.
The release of Sword of Convallaria on Steam occurred back in 2024, and ever since, it has been updated with new characters, weapons, and content to play through. There are also special events that take place in the game, such as a collab with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which allows you to obtain characters like Geralt, Yennefer, Triss, and Ciri.
It's Perfect If You Crave Some Final Fantasy
Sword Of Convallaria Offers Choices That Affect The Story
The main character and the mysterious cat in Sword of Convallaria.
Playing Sword of Convallaria is perfect for players who have been craving something similar to Final Fantasy – especially with its F2P nature. The game is set in the country of Iria, which is undergoing multiple conflicts raised by factions in search of magical resources – which highly resembles the story of Final Fantasy 16. Your character, aided by other allies, will set off to bring peace to the nation.
In terms of gameplay, you’ll experience tactical turn-based battles on grid-based maps, where positioning becomes extremely important to ensure success. In addition to this, you’ll also be met with choices, which can change the direction of the campaign, as you can make new friends or enemies.
