2025 was a big year for Russell Crowe, who finally brought his WWII passion project, Nuremberg, to the big screen. However, just a few years ago, he teamed up with Zac Efron for a forgotten Vietnam War thriller that’s quietly becoming a massive success on streaming. Crowe and Efron star opposite Jack Picking and Kyle Allen in The Greatest Beer Run Ever, which was released straight to streaming on Apple TV back in 2022. All these years later, the film is still a success for Apple TV, hanging around the global top 10 in more than 10 countries.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever was written and directed by Peter Farrelly, with Brian Hayes Currie and Pete Jones also contributing to the script. The film is loosely based on the book of the same name by Chick Donohue and J.T. Molloy. The Greatest Beer Run Ever was panned by critics, earning a poor 41% mark on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, but it was a massive hit among audiences. The film scored a strong 91% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, but this comes from only 50 reviews, so it’s not a large sample size. It’s estimated to have cost around $40 million.

For Crowe, The Greatest Beer Run Ever came in the same year that he starred opposite Matt Hookings in Prizefighter: The Life of Jem Belcher, the boxing biopic that’s currently streaming on Prime Video. It was also around the same time he made his MCU debut as Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder. For Efron, The Greatest Beer Run Ever was only one year before his commanding performance in The Iron Claw, the wrestling movie that many felt was snubbed from the Oscars.

What Other Movies Are on Apple TV Right Now?

The most popular movie on Apple TV right now is F1, Brad Pitt’s perfect summer blockbuster that also stars Kerry Condon and Javier Bardem. The film is trailed closely by The Gorge, the sci-fi smash hit starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller. The Gorge premiered almost a full year ago, but the film is becoming an all-time streaming juggernaut for Apple TV. Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth is experiencing similar success — despite being panned by critics last year, it’s still #4 on Apple TV global streaming charts.
