Putting Anguirus in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova could be the solution to an issue that's currently plaguing the Monsterverse. Although both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were both framed as Godzilla-Kong crossovers, it's hard to deny that the pair of films heavily favored Kong.

While Godzilla fans can certainly celebrate the victories he achieved over Kong in the two movies, his screen-time and influence over the overarching narratives left much to be desired. Both were ultimately Kong stories, with each having him as part of the human characters' adventure, and Godzilla being a figure that would emerge at critical moments.

There's no secret as to why this has happened twice now. Both times, the justification for less emphasis on Godzilla has been clear, which is the notion that Kong is easier to connect with on an emotional level with the movies' human characters and the audience. This line of thinking could very easily shape Godzilla x Kong: Supernova as well - but it shouldn't.

Introducing Anguirus In Supernova Can Fix The Monsterverse's Godzilla Problem

Kong may be more universally relatable, but that doesn't mean it's possible for an audience to invest in Godzilla as a character. Multiple movies, from Godzilla vs. Destoroyah to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, have proven that in the face of his larger-than-life status, is indeed feasible to push the viewer into feeling empathy for Godzilla.

One of the ways in which the Monsterverse can accomplish that is by building on an Easter egg in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which showed an Anguirus skeleton in the ruins of Godzilla's underwater city. What this indicates is that Anguirus resided in Godzilla's home thousands of years ago, meaning that he - like his Toho counterpart - may have been a trusted ally to Godzilla.

Formally introducing Anguirus in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova could fit in well with an aspect of Godzilla's life that'll become even more relevant in the aftermath of The New Empire - loneliness. It's long been understood in the Monsterverse that both Godzilla and Kong are the sole surviving members of their species.

But the discovery of the Great Apes has altered things dramatically, at least for Kong. Now, he has a family and an entire tribe to lead. Not only that, but he has a new Titan ally in Shimo. Kong's positive change in life status should allow more attention to be put on Godzilla's situation, as he remains a loner in the Monsterverse.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova can extrapolate that sense of loneliness, which was touched on in Godzilla: King of the Monsters when the Titan was shown lying down in his underwater home. If the story pertains to the Monsterverse's ancient history, exploring what happened to the city - and to Anguiurus - would enable a deeper focus on the tragic nature of Godzilla's backstory.

Similar to how Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire finally paid off Kong's journey by giving him a family, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova can formally introduce Anguirus by revealing the existence of another member of his species. By making the new Anguirus an ally to Godzilla, the movie can offer an emotionally satisfying conclusion to Godzilla's next story.
