Apple TV is already doing an incredible job of dominating the sci-fi genre, but its reign will further solidify with its upcoming cyberpunk show.

For the last couple of years, Apple TV has managed to deliver one compelling sci-fi show after another, allowing it to become the home for some of the best TV offerings in the genre. Even in 2026, the streaming service cemented its reputation by doubling down on ambitious and character-driven sci-fi shows like Severance season 2, Foundation season 3, and Pluribus.

From the looks of it, though, Apple TV is only getting started and has a bright future ahead with its highly anticipated cyberpunk book adaptation set to release soon.

Apple TV’s Sci-Fi Reign Will Continue If It Gets Neuromancer Right

Neuromancer was widely considered "unfilmable" for a very long time because of how complex and abstract William Gibson's prose can be. Since bringing plausible cyberpunk worlds to the screen demands heavy use of VFX, a worthy Neuromancer adaptation also required a studio willing to commit both the budget and the creative restraint necessary to translate its dense ideas into visuals without over-explaining them.

Owing to these factors, it is hard not to deny that Apple TV is taking a major risk by adapting William Gibson's Neuromancer.

However, considering Apple TV's history with sci-fi shows like Silo, Foundation, Severance, and Dark Matter, it seems like no other streaming service could have taken up this challenge with the same level of confidence. After proving how capable it is of bringing some of the best sci-fi book adaptations to the small screen, Apple TV has the perfect opportunity to solidify its reign.

By doing justice to something as complex as Neuromancer, Apple TV would prove that it is not merely chasing prestige sci-fi trends but actively playing a crucial role in shaping the genre's future.

Neuromancer Might Face Some Rivalry From Prime Video’s New Cyberpunk Show

Cyberpunk is one sci-fi subgenre that has barely been explored in movies, let alone on the small screen. While there are shows like Person of Interest and Mr. Robot that are considered modern cyberpunks, getting pure cyberpunk right in the live-action medium is no easy feat. The subgenre, however, is about to get a whole new wave of recognition on the small screen soon with Apple TV's Neuromancer and Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099.

Since both shows belong to the same brand of sci-fi and will also likely premiere around the same time, it will not be surprising if comparisons are drawn between them.

If both Blade Runner 2099 and Neuromancer turn out to be as good as they are expected to be, it will be a major win for sci-fi. However, if one outperforms the other in both critical and commercial reception, the lesser-received series risks being overshadowed regardless of its individual merits.

Regardless of how Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099 and Apple TV's Neuromancer will turn out, though, it is hard not to be grateful that both shows will potentially give hard sci-fi and the cyberpunk subgenre a major push. This, in turn, could pave the way for other adaptations of other books, like Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash and George Miller's Hardwired.
